reservation in instiutions of excellence (IITs,IIMs)

The decision to reserve almost half of the seats in the insitutions of excellence that are making a valuable contribution to the nation's development and being a force to reckon with, isn't a nice idea. True - the quality of basic education have so much disparity and the people, MOSTLY belonging to SC/ST's and to a certain extent OBC's are victim to this disparity. But, reserving places for them in these institutions of excellence at PG level would mean bringing in the people who lack the foundation for the rigorous education at these institutions and forcing them to qualify at the higher level when they actually lack the foundation for it. So the right approach is to strengthen the basic education right from primary level and expose them to enormous opportunities and encourage them to see themselves at par with any other. This should be done with private-public partnership where the reach of private schools even at villages play an important role in imparting quality education where the government schools simply fail. I believe if one is fed with very good quality basic education and encouraged in the right way, anyone can compete with just about anyone.
So, I think the very practical way to go forward now is to have a time limit for this reservation. So that the up coming generation can be imparted with quality education and enable them to compete for themselves. For the people who have already missed the bus, the reservation may do some good but strict transparency should be ensured in this reservation without diluting the quality of the education these institutions provide.
Whats your take ?

I agree. The simple idea of a successful society is to provide each and everybody with equal opportunities.
I daresay reservation is needed in a different context. With admission fees skyrocketing and the IIMs being just a dream for the majority of the populace...what is needed is a transparent system (aka reservation) that takes into consideration the economic conditions of the candidate.
I do agree that reservations are not required in premier institutions. Any one securing admission through the merit is however sponsored by any bank without much questions or issues. Giving such reservations will result in admitting students who lack the merit to get into these schools and more importantly will avoid the students with merit to get admission because of their birth society/Caste - Thiyagu - 01-05-2006 15.30 CET
